Sights of Ssese Gateway beach.

By Desire Mbabaali

Well, I am the kind that craves for breath taking sights, and for a while, I have been fantasizing about seating by the lake shore in the wee hours of the morning, and watch the sun rise, the dark horizon slowly, and beautifully coming to life under the bright rays.

Entebbe, Uganda, a town on the shores of the great Lake Victoria, is known for its sandy beaches and only about 41.5 Kilometers from the capital, Kampala. That is the first place that came to mind when I thought about actualizing my fantasy. “Well, it wouldn’t hurt if I woke early in the morning and go sightseeing… would it?” I asked myself. I knew I needed this and I wasn’t going to let it pass. Was I?

Ssese gateway beach it was. Free entrance, not to mention it is only a stone’s throw away from Entebbe highway, making it the most accessible beach in Entebbe. Actually, when I was a child, I often thought our car was headed straight into the lake each time we passed the place. Today, I love driving by at night to admire the gleaming light reflections that make the lake look like a mirror. As though the electric lights from neighboring buildings are checking their beaming faces in it. There is a communal stretch of the beach that can be accessed any time of the day, that is also home to a number of bird species, you will see stalking their prey with a keen careful eye, or marabou stocks on a crazy seemingly unyielding hunt for warms, which reminds you of the ‘early bird catches the warm’ saying.

Cloudy it is, with a dark blanket stretched out over the skies as though shielding us from being sun burnt. The lake is calm and the waves lazily swing by the shores. The waters warm from the previous night but the sting of the cold creeping deep into the bones. In the far distance, where your eyes can’t reach is a cloud of fog that made it seem like the clouds where dripping from the skies down. Generally, the sight impeccable and the lake mirroring the face of those dark angry clouds. Just the perfect time for meditation, just the right atmosphere to tell you there must be a God, somewhere…

When the clouds eventually give in to the scotching sun, the waters shine together with it, crystal clear. The flying birds more active than usual flapping their wings stronger as though in welcome of it. But the palm trees in the far distance come to our rescue shielding us from the infuriated sun now beaming at us with its big smile…

More people are now coming at the lake for meditation, to touch and wash their faces in the water for blessings from whichever supreme being that makes things happen, as one gentleman explains… but I wasn’t going to wait for more people to come in, or for the hotel which opens at 10am…I had to stop my adventures and head to work. We can do this next time…
